Creating New Space

It has been about six months now living in the new house, slowly things are taking place and rooms are becoming more and more complete.  In making our new house a home I am trying to use items that we already have, items with meaning and sentiment, items that were maybe handed down from past generations, items that tell a story.

Right now I am working on our room that in basically a walk through into the living room.  Because this room is a walk through I have had a hard time figuring out what to do with the space to make it useful.  It's a great room with big bright windows facing the backyard, and one half of the double sided fireplace facing in...but because of the layout I find it very difficult to utilize.

                                          Room before:

Sitting in the garage was two old wing back chairs from my grandmothers old house.  In trying to make use of old items I figured this may be an opportunity to make use of them.  I figured that since the room has a big beautiful brick fireplace in it that a "reading/sitting/knitting" room may be the best way to make use of the space.  I found an old table from my great grandparents house sitting in the basement that I thought I could use it as a book table.  Even though this table is very old it isn't very valuable and made out of plywood, plywood with thick tarry paint coating...so in saying that I'm not going to take the time and effort in stripping and re-finishing but just give it a fresh coat of paint and maybe a light sanding to give it a rustic/antique look.

                                           Table before:

                                          Table after:

I ended up doing about four coats of white wash which is basically just paint and water, I just used some leftover paint I had sitting in the basement.  After letting the table dry overnight I took some sandpaper and roughed up the edges, legs and table top.  This effect gives you a worn rustic aged look, sort of a "cottage style" piece.

I will probably also give it a clear coat just to protect it.

I really think that the room came together fairly well considering everything I used I already had to begin with!  Sometimes thing just need to be re vamped to give them new life.

We now have a fresh new space to read, knit and relax.  One thing is for sure...I can't complain about the view!

                                                       Happy creating!

  1. Wow, you did a great job.

  2. Lovely view and I like the idea about having things in the home of real value. We were just discussing this same idea for our own the other day.
