This Moment...

I decided to be inspired by Amanada Blake Soules' blog (as many of you fellow bloggers are!) and begin making Friday's: Moment Friday's...One single photograph from the past week, no words to describe it, just a simple, special moment...a moment to savour and remember. If your inspired to do the same leave a link to your "moment" in the comment section below.

Watermelon Hat

Watermelon with seeds...

Seedless Watermelon, lol...

I was trying to think up some different items that would reflect a summer feeling...and I came across this cute little free pattern from Spud and Chloe's blog. I knitted up the 0-6 month size in about 2hrs...it turned out really well and was really easy, great for those chilly Spring/Summer evenings!

Sprouting Seeds!!!

Brock soaking up the sun!

I am so excited that we finally have a new deck to "play" on...we have only had it a few days and I have no idea how I ever lived without it. I decided to go all out with this one, go big or go home!!! It's 20 feet long, 14 feet wide, has a railing with black aluminum balusters, partition from the neighbours and a trellis covering half of it! Here are a few photos of our time spent on it today in sun!

Bumble Bee Booties

I was trying to think of different designs that I could come up with for the simple mary janes and thought up of this bumble bee design...I think it's really cute for summer and works for either a boy or a girl. You can even use eye buttons instead of regular buttons so they look like a whole bumble bee!

Vintage Slouch Hat

I made my eyelet slouch hat the other day using reclaimed wool from an old sweater that had had the biscuit. It turn out really well, a real old 20's feel to it.

A friend of mine who designs and creates purses had asked me if I had any items she could incorporate in her spring/summer line. So I figured this little hat would be perfect for the job! Her photo shoot turned out wonderful and everything really flowed together nicely!

Purses are handmade by Yvette Michelle Cottle Darby in Shanty Bay Ont, she has been designing for the past 15yrs. Her successful business is named Verona Collections, please contact her via her website at: http://veronacollections.com/

Some of my Favourite Teas

I LOVE tea, I find tea relaxing and enjoyable to drink. I am also interested in the health benefits that different types of teas provide. Here is a small list of teas that I love and a little blurb about each one!

Green Tea: Full of antioxidant that keep free radicals from attacking your body, green tea is one of the most popular teas. It helps prevents tooth decay, Inhibits arthritis, and helps the body burn more calories.

White Tea: White tea is produced by plucking the tea leaves before they fully mature. Some benefits include, boosting the immune system and helps fight cancer-causing free radicals.

Black Tea: Black tea, unlike green and white tea goes through a fermentation process that gives it its dark colour and distinct flavour. Some of the benefits of Black tea are: prevents bad breath, prevents clogged arteries and helps reduce LDL levels (bad) cholesterol.

Oolong Tea: This tea has a sweet and flowery flavour. It helps prevent cavities, improves blood flow to the heart and helps build stronger bones.

These are just a few of my favourites, if you guys have any favourites of your own feel free to share in the comments below...I'm always interested in trying new kinds!

Skater Hat

I was playing around with a hat design the other day and came up with a crocheted beanie with a brim. I think it looks a little like a skater hat that some of the kids are wearing these days. I really wish I knew how to read a crochet pattern, maybe someday when I have enough time on my hands I can sit down with a book and actually teach myself, who knows when that will ever happen though!

Preping Seeds!

Today we went outside and prepared some more seeds for our garden this year. With the help of chubby little fingers and cold wet noses we placed the seeds in the peat moss containers. Now all we have to do is sit back and wait for some sprouts!

Baby Set Complete!

I have finished the complete baby set. Hat, mitts, sweater, booties and tiny newborn shorties. As I have said before I used Lion Brand patterns to knit the hat, mitts, booties and sweater but for the shorties I have designed these myself.

I decided to go with something that would be perfect for Spring/Summer and could be used as a soaker as well. It took a few try's to get it just right but in the end I think it turned out well.

It's hard knitting for a newborn because they grow so quickly and are all different sizes when they are born, at least with knitting you get a little bit of stretch out of the yarn. I feel as though I have been working on this set for ages, I guess because of Easter and the nicer weather I didn't dedicate as much time as I would have had it been Winter.

I will be posting the "shorties" pattern this week if any of you want to give it a try!

Time to go outside and enjoy the rest of this beautiful day...it is my birthday after all...29 forever!

Earth Day Tips

With Earth day coming up I thought it would be a good idea to share 10 tips that you all can do to make the earth a better place for you and your children.

1. Shut the water off when you do not need it on, like while brushing your teeth.
2. Leave your car at home.
3. Walk or bike to work.
4. Recycle.
5. Compost, you can save so much trash by doing this and it's great for your garden!
6. Change your light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs.
7. Change the air filters in your home.
8. Maintain your vehicle, like filling your tires.
9. Drive smarter, slow down...accelerating and braking too hard can reduce your fuel economy
10. Turn off lights when you are not in the room, this is a huge pet peeve of mine, it drives me crazy when people do this! Also un-plug your appliances when not in use.

Let's all do our part to try and make this world a better place for our children and generations to come. This Earth is all we've got!

Summer Fashion Trends 2010

With the nicer weather lately I have had an itch to get prepared for some summer fashion and thought I would share with you all whats going to be "hot" this summer.

Hair: For 2010 is more about being free and casual vs prim and proper last year. The four most popular hair trends for summer 2010 are the bob, fringe, layers (think Jennifer Aniston) and a cool crop. Very natural and low maintenance.

The number one accessory for your hair this summer are bows headbands...could actually design a couple of knits ones, don't you think? Just remember to wear with caution, it can become very easy to look childish or tacky. Think unique and high quality, fabrics include silks, leathers and knits.

The key looks for summer are:
Hot pants and boy shorts
Knee high and over the knee socks
high dress splits
Jumpsuits and playsiuts
and see through and sheer fabrics really airy and light

The colour palette for the season includes a very green based season also prevalent are pinks, blues, browns, and even some neon colours like neon greens...flashback to the 90's maybe???

These colours are very light and bright. Some pattern colour combos will be inspired from pop art of the 60's and 70's.
Well I know that I am ready to start getting my summer wardrobe in order and remember it doesn't have to cost you a fortune, you can buy a few new pieces to incorporate into your already existing wardrobe. Remember to shop with $ in mind, buy second hand, except hand me downs and alter what you already have. These are just trends remember!
Good luck!

Easter Weekend

We had a really beautiful time this Easter long weekend. The weather was absolutely beautiful, we spent most of the weekend outside with family, neighbours and friends. I took my son to the local farm for the annual Easter egg hunt and he had a blast! We collected all kinds of eggs to put in his basket, saw the Easter bunny and feed the animals.

With the family his cousins and him rode there bikes, played road hockey and drew dinosaurs on the driveway in chalk. It was a really nice time to take a step back for a moment and cherish this time in his life. Such a time of purity and innocence. Over the weekend we visited a friend and her new puppy "Maple" a 6 week old Puggle, Pug and Beagle cross...so cute!

I really hope that all of you had a wonderful time like I did with my family is it so important to share the holidays with the ones you love.

"Happy Easter,
happy Spring,
happy happy everything!"

Newborn Baby Sweater

I hope everybody had a wonderful Easter! We had beautiful weather, great times with family and I finally got caught up on a few loose ends. One of the items I finished this long weekend was the newborn baby sweater I had been working on. Once again it is a free pattern the can be found on the Lion brand website. It turned out well and I think that it will be a nice compliment to the hat, mitt and bootie combo that will belong to this set. Now all I have to make is the diaper cover and it will be a complete set.

Sewing Baskets (Part One)

I decided the other day it is time to consolidate my four sewing baskets, well I guess I shouldn't say "my" because they really aren't mine at all...two of them were my mother's, one of them my great grandmother's on my mom's side and the other my great grandmother's on my dad's side (she actually wrote on the bottom of the basket that she received it from my grandma and grandfather on her birthday in 1950)

I have never actually sat down and picked apart these baskets piece by piece before, it was more just rummaging through them if I needed a button or a needle of sorts. So the other day my son and I sat on the landing at the top of the stairs placed all the baskets around us and away we went...well was I in over my head, I still haven't finished sorting all the bits and pieces of interesting finds. I think I spent most of my time in amazement of the unique little pieces of treasure I had found then actually organizing anything at all.

I loved finding the old needles that were once held by my great grandmothers hand, the buttons that possibly were worn on an old blouse and old sewing patterns that they once followed. Days were different then but traditions stay strong and I hope that someday I will be handing down my sewing basket(s) to my great granddaughter or grandson for them to someday enjoy!

Added Spring Touch!

Just thought I'd share a photo of the eyelet slouch hat with a touch of Spring Easter flare!

My son and I watched a movie last night, it was one that has been out for awhile but one we had never seen. I don't remember hearing too much about it when it was released but always had an interest in viewing it.

We went to the library this past week as always and saw "Enchanted" on the shelve, picked it up along with some others and of course Ashton's dinosaur books and away we went. Well yesterday evening after a busy day of working in the garden and catching up on some orders we popped it in the portable DVD player snuggled in bed and hit play. Well, l loved this movie...it is of course a little off beat (she is a fairy tale princess) but I thought that it was extremely well done. Ashton, poor guy couldn't stay awake and is probably a little too young anyway to fully understand it but I couldn't take my eyes off of it. Part of me thinks that it is the little girl in me, the dreamer in me that hooked me on the film, it is very magical and fairy like. This movie is pure, it's cute, it's witty and I think it is great for all age groups, children, teens and adults. This will definitely be a keeper on my list of favourite movies. Hoping myself that happily ever after will happen! The end.
